Great post. I think there's a message in there
for us non-writers also. By the way, I finally
got a chance to read The Girl Who Stopped Swimming
and loved it!

Awesome. I went right over and read and added that blog to my daily reads. Great find.

I really appreciated that post. I have a tendency, not so much to be "better than thou", but to more, "well, they may be better at such and such, but at least I don't - whatever". It's still a way of feeling comfortable with myself by putting others down and not trying to enter into their experience.

And I strongly dislike reading stories in which many characters are made to be wholly repulsive or venal or whatever: most people have some good characteristics, or motives or something.

Thanks for your insight!

Totally unrelated to your post, but I've been seeing the news about the flooding in what I think I remember is your neck of the woods. Hoping you and your home are safe and dryish (I figure dry might be too much to hope for at the moment)!
