We Interrupt This Blog to Wet Our Pants (In a ladylike way, of course)

Oh hi.

The Girl Who Stopped Swimming just made the 7/7/09 New York Times Bestseller list.

This is my FIRST time to ever ever ever get even a toehold there. I am just...fancy. I am fancy.

Dear EVERYONE at Grand Central who read the manuscript and said, OH YES I LOVE THIS let's make it a lead title and get the cover JUST right and make sure the handsellers know about it and sell it to the Germans and spread the word,

Dear beautiful Handsellers who read the ARC and and the hardback and liked it enough to want to put it into the hands of readers and say, THIS ONE, YOU WANT THIS,

Dear Dear Best Beloveds who bought the book for themselves and their moms and siblings and best friends, who chose it for their book clubs, who talked about it with their friends and on their blogs and facebook pages and who liked it enough to go on review sites and say so...

Thank you.

The only thing, THE ONLY THE ONLY THING, that gets a book into the hands of readers is word of mouth. The only thing that works is...ya'll. The folks listed above, who read it and liked it enough to want to share it.

This is just a very good day for me. Because of you. Because of you. Because of you. Thank you SO FREAKING STINKING WEEPING CHAMPAGNE DRINKING MUCH.

And to think you thought getting your name on the marquee at the Gadsen Mall was something. We knew you were destined for greater things! Hope it gets scads of people to immediately rush out to buy your book, so you can build up your emergency (read: air conditioning) fund.

Posted by: Aimee at June 25, 2009 10:46 AM

I have news for you: Word of mouth is not the only way people find this book.

In every book store I visit - no matter what city I'm in - TGWSS is PROMINENTLY displayed, usually on an end-cap. You can't help but notice it, what with the GAW-geous aqua cover and all, and once someone has picked it up..."Cha-Ching!" goes the cash register and "Whoosh" goes the book up the NYT Bestseller list.

Okay, true confession time. I've never read your books. I found your blog by chance and then we had the same birthday, and...and I BOUGHT Gods in Alabama, but something happened and I got distracted and, well, its still in the book pile. Having said that, I will - today - purchase TGWSS and help keep it moving up The List! *smooch*

Posted by: CityGirl at June 25, 2009 11:08 AM

Congratulations! Read it and loved it as soon as it came out. And my friend in my book club just picked it for us to read next, so I plan to enjoy it again soon!

Posted by: catherino at June 25, 2009 11:27 AM

I agree with Dee...you're the only one surprised that you are getting these accolades, WE the best beloveds knew all along.

I agree with Tammy...I feel oh so smug for having discovered you way back at Gods

And I agree with everyone who said thank YOU for writing so well - you're a treat.

Congratulations, you totally deserve it! I chose it (with the group's consent) for our very first book club meeting in a couple of weeks and my friend went to buy it and it was sold out at our Border's. So I am helping, at least in our town!

Posted by: Alison at June 27, 2009 12:58 PM

I was standing in front of the book rack at the supermarket today, checking for TGWSS (it wasn't there yet). Another woman was scanning the shelves and I told her about the book, how fabulous it was, how wonderful the other two are, how much I love the blog, the name of the books and the blog AND the author - I even described the cover of TGWSS so she could spot it easily. She thanked me, saying she loved recommendations because she never knew what to read. She also said that the cover art highly influences her purchase, so your beautiful book will definitely catch her eye. I've made it a point to mention the book to every woman I know who reads (and quite a few who don't read, and even more whom I do not know). I don't do this because I want to help you sell books. I do it because I loved the book and want to share it with everyone.
