Things to do While Endlessly Ill: Day Three (Part One)
Day three is when you HAVE to stop doing the things you have done for the first couple of days or you are ABSOLUTELY going to get a plastic crock-pot liner put over your head. (I spent the first days lying on the sofa, whining at Scott and watching either terrible TV or good TV I had ALREADY SEEN.) SO. Here is how I spent yesterday:
1) NOT WHINING! This took a lot of effort. I counted it as 30 minutes of aerobic activity on my Weight Watchers chart.
2) Online shopping for things we absolutely cannot afford to buy this summer. Like a WHOLE set of new everyday dishes.
Digression: We’ve been married over fourteen years now, and that makes our everyday dishes pushing fifteen, as we registered for ‘em when we got engaged. Now, fifteen years is not THAT old for dishes…unless you have children.
Ever since Sam graduated from baby bowls, our hardy stoneware has suffered MANY casualties---plates, cups, saucers, NO ONE IS SAFE. They have been dropped, smuggled out to the YARD, (to make YARD PIE in, one assumes?) and lost, stuffed under beds and sofas to be chipped by the Super hero action figures who are shoved in after them (are they on secret plate rescue missions? Or even more secret I DO NOT WANT TO PUT MY TOYS AWAY missions? The WISE mom suspects the answer is B) The dishes have been folded and mutilated and spindled and ---
Interal digression inside the digression: Once when Sam was maybe 9, I remember coming into the den to see him STANDING ON A DINNER PLATE. He had his feet kinda CURVED to fit them inside the rim, and he was balanced there happily watching TV.
Me: What are you DOING?
Him: Watching Jeopardy. (DUH was implied)
Me: WHY ARE YOU STANDING ON A DINNER PLATE???
He looked down and discovered the plate and evinced all manner of completely genuine surprise and said, “How did THAT get there?”
BOTH my children have this automatic STAND ON IT impulse – if something is on the floor, they go PERCH on it and wobble around without noticing the object is there OR that they are in the process of breaking it with their feet. They are especially prone to perching on objects that are MINE. The more VALUABLE and/or breakable and/or IMPROBABLE an object it is, the MORE LIKELY they are to not notice it should be picked up and go stand on it. In other words, I could leave fifty SHOES or CAT TOYS on the floor and they would not go stand on these things. BUT! I have found them standing on
---my missing wallet
---A silk blouse that fell out of the cleaner bag
---The cordless phone
---a signed first edition of a MICHAEL CHABON book
---A completely full and unopened bottle of wine…RED, of course.
ANYWAY:
By 2005, Maisy was out of baby bowls, too, and we’d lost so MANY dishes that we had to eat in shifts. Luckily, Scott’s brain is SET on “Eternally remember inconsequential details,” so one day, when I was eating my squash casserole off one saucer and my pork chop off another, and I casually said, “I wish I knew the name of this pattern so we could have enough dinner plates,” his eyes went dark and misty, like he was peering through the layers of space of time, and he said, in a hypnotized, robot-y voice, “The dinnerware is Northwinds by Pfaltzgraff.”

It had of course been discontinued, but we got some extra plates and such off ebay and limped on. NOW 6 of 7 remaining plates have a chip or a crack, we have five saucers and NO coffee cups, we are down to TWO salad plates, and the kids are eating mostly off plastic fish plates we got for a dollar each off a clearance end cap at Target.
My kitchen can be described as HYPER CHEERFUL BLUE AND WHITE COUNTRY FRENCH-ISHY. Here it is:

It was an inherited kitchen---luckily the folks who owned this house before us had good taste because my deco style is “It’s not exactly me, but I am not sure what IS, so fine.” I don’t really HAVE the ability to match styles and colors and it seems nice looking and do I care enough to change it? I mean, my OFFICE, yes, my BEDROOM, yes, but a KITCHEN? No.
Here are the dishes on the short list of the dishes I will not be buying this summer:
A) Yes, I know. NOT TERRIBLY EXCITING, and not at all blue.
BUT LOOK AT THE ACCENT PIECES! So so cute.
B) I shamelessly <3 me some crate-n-barrel stoneware.
On the minus side: This is WAY too modern for my hyper-cheerful country-french-ish blue and white kitchen.
On the plus side: IT HAS BLUE IN IT.
C) I LIKE this …but I think of it WITH the wallpaper and my eyelids start to twitch. I think anti-matchy-matchy brain convulsions would ensue.
I also saw some very CUTE dishes with little CRABS scurrying on blue waves, but I think after about two weeks I would get a bad WHIMSY OVERDOSE and HURL them across the room.
OBVIOUSLY I did not spend the ENTIRE day assiduously NOT WHINING and shopping for dishes. But I actually feel the TINIETS BIT BETTER. I’m going to go work on the book---I will finish this tomorrow.
No really, I swear. I WILL. Do not LOOK at me like that! I AM SICK! I SWEAR I will finish and the first one of you that even BREATHES the word pink socks in my direction is likely to get this empty box of PUFFS to the side of the head. *vigorous nodding*
Ooh vicarious shopping! One of my favorite things to do! And you linked all purty dishes too - thank you, my husband thanks you, our bank account thanks you.

They have these stores around here called Christmas Tree Shops (they're year round stores. I stopped trying to figure out why years ago.). I think they were recently bought by Bed Bath and Beyond and I think alot of it is their overstocks. The stuff is ridiculously cheap. The stores aren't pretty but I've been in much worse. We had the same problem with out dishes being systematically assassinated by our children. I got an entire set for 12 - dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, mugs (not cups and saucers) for like $30. They were nothing special but they matched, I didn't hate them and they kept us from having to eat mac and cheese straight from the pot.

Posted by: Em at July 10, 2008 8:43 AMAfter eleven years on Capistrano by Pfaltzgraff (and the loss of only one dinner plate and one salad plate) I convined the hubs we needed new dishes and we splurged on the red Fiesta ware. Now I'm going to accent with the yellow Fiesta ware.
It's really quite sad how happy my new dishes make me.

I also have a much ravaged discontinued Pfaltzgraff set. My very bad dogs have smashed most of them when trying to pilfer things off the counters. Luckily Midnight Sun is in the By Request catalog.
Posted by: Laura L at July 10, 2008 11:46 AMI think the first patter would work. I also think if you bought just a few of the crab ones, like salad plates or something you wouldn't use every day, or just a bowl, you wouldn't feel the sense of it being overdone.
But, I am agreeing with those who say check out the Fiestaware. I have some of my grandmother's origional -- they are not allowed in the dishwasher, but I recently bought some new ones to replace some other dishes we had (we never got our own plates, ours were all given to us with the "we're just going to throw them out unless you want them" offer).
The best think about the Fiestaware is that you can mix and match them. And, you can start off with some, and then add more as the money/color selection inspires you. Very versitile.

The question now is... Will this get me to design the kitchen like Ducky has been wanted me to do for five years? I hate searching for wallpaper border.
I like one and two, but i like the last one too. BTW your kitchen is far too lovely to really use... oh and neat too.
Posted by: Cele at July 10, 2008 12:16 PMOooh! I like option C!! I don't think it would be too much w/the wallpaper... (and my daddy was a Prof'l Interior Designer, so.) The little bit of yellow is a nice break from all the blue. And yes, blue and yellow is very Country/French Provincial.
Most of all, it's cheerful and that's very impt esp when dieting.
But also, for all of y'all (says the Yankee in NYC) surely you must know about Replacements.com? It's a fantastic site w/gobs of not only dishes, etc. but INFORMATION. Really fascinating stuff. AND they let their employees take their dogs (and other pets) to work w/them!
It's in North Carolina if you feel like making a trip out of it.
I'm just busy being stunned that someone else has children who have the same strange urge to stand or walk on things that really, really shouldn't ever see the underside of feet.

We have very similar Pfaltzgraaf plates. Except we didn't register because we didn't have a bridal shower because we didn't have a proper wedding, so we simply bought a boxed set at a Pfaltzgraaf outlet--do you have any of those down there? Slightly seconds, but still, nice plates. And not terribly expensive. And then when a set of four was not enough (because we'd run out of dishes before we got a full load in the dishwasher) we bought a not-as-nice boxed set from someplace like Target. We are not fancy, alas. But we do have enough plates for the time being.

It must be that "how to drive mom crazy" gene.

Then again, I'm probably not the one to ask because I don't GET the whole thing of matching your dishes to your kitchen. I mean, you're not buying something to hang on the wall. You're buying something to put food on and eat it - probably, from the sound of it, not just in the kitchen (the eating, I mean) but in several different rooms in the house. So to me, the only thing that should count would be that you should love it and feel like you can stand to look at it for years to come - until your kidlets stand on it to death (or whatever inevitably happens to make them go to that Great Dish Barn in the Sky).
SO - a vote for B from the person who has several sets of dishes (because I am a Dish Ho), NONE of which were purchased to coordinate with any kitchen in which I have ever lived, cooked, or eaten. :-)

My vote goes for C, and I don't think it's too much.
We have two sets of dishes, the boring mushroom colored stuff (and yes, mushroom is TOO a color) that we got at Ikea, and the blue-and-purple pottery stuff that's our good stuff.
We've been desperately searching for new china and flatware we both like. It's been five years now.
