THE VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR, explained in detail HERE, is up and running. Short version: this is an online event that helps you definitively tell my pub house to hire me to write more books, gets you a signed first edition of THE ALMOST SISTERS, supports a flagship Indie bookstore, makes me love you EVEN MORE DEARLY because I love my job and you are helping me keep it, and also makes you eligible for some CRAZY FUN prize drawings. GET IN ON THIS. You can link to this blog, tell your friends, share on FB/twooter/instapic/linkied/snapwhatever, or, you know, just go and ORDER NOW!
I revealed the first tier of prizes in a Facebook Live, but if you don’t have 11 minutes to watch me make BOTH a cocktail and a questionable life choice— my cocktail making assistant is my underage daughter— I will just tell you the prize.
In The Almost Sisters, usually level-headed artist Leia Birch is swept off her comic-con barstool and into bed for a Bat-Tumble with a guy who REALLY knows how to rock a cape, and she fetches up pregnant. A lot of booze goes into the decision to drag a nameless, hot Batman up to her room by his utility belt, so on Tuesday I revealed prize one is a BARTENDER CRAFT COCKTAIL pack that contains almost everything you need to make YOUR OWN questionable life choices!
The second we took the first two orders (done) two of these came up for grabs: A book with boozy recipes from some of your favorite authors (including me *scrubs toe, smiles like a demented bourbon-hound*) A jar of BARTENDERLY CORRECT maraschino cherries, and handmade floral bitters which you will NEED to make the cocktail my husband invented—recipe in the book.
Now it is time to show you prize two; we are doing this Kickstarter style, but for OPPOSITE we didn’t get all the levels open. IT MADE ME SAD. SO! This time I am making the numbers LOW. If we get above the top tier, I will just GET MORE PRIZES. I want to give ALL this stuff away, ya’ll! And this may be my favorite.
THIS PRIZE IS FOR DORKS AND NERDS—welcome! You are my people. If you have a favorite Dr Who, if you still miss Buffy, if you pre-bought your IMAX tix to Wonder Woman in SPITE of Batman V/S Superman being nigh unwatchable, THE ALMOST SISTERS has tons of nerd-references hidden like Easter eggs in the sentences. So I wanted you to have your own Nerd Prize. (Don’t worry, cool people, the cool person prize will be revealed next.) When we get to TWENTY books ordered (and we are close…) FIVE FICT-FACTS from The Almost Sisters come up for grabs.
Maybe you are saying OH HELLS TO THE YAH! or maybe you are saying WHAT IS A FICT FACT? or maybe you are saying both of these things really loud and leaping about because you are just a very enthusiastic person. NO JUDGEMENT HERE.
If you have been reading me for a while, you know it pleases me deeply to partner with artists who work in other mediums to bring fictional things I imagine into the real world. For example, THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING is narrated by an Art Quilter, so I commissioned brilliant real life art quilter Pamela Allen to create one of the fictional quilts from the book. BETWEEN GEORGIA features a deaf-blind dollmaker, and I had my brother, who is a professional sculptor, make the thematically important little Fox Doll. And so on.
THE ALMOST SISTERS is narrated by Leia Birch, a comic book artist whose graphic Novel, VIOLENCE IN VIOLET, has become a cult classic. While THE ALMOST SISTERS is mostly about her relationship with her near-perfect, near-sister Rachel and her grandmother’s secrets (including the key to a murder mystery that has roots that go all the way back to the Civil War), her struggle to write the prequel to V in V acts as a small story-within-the–story.
Violet is the feckless little blond and Violence is the purple sex-cannibal who guards her. (Every girl needs one fo these, except maybe Violence is a little over-enthusiastic about the murder parts.) On this cover, they have teamed up with a scrappy orphan—he is searching for his missing sister—to navigate a post-apocalyptic version of the zombie-infested South. I have had a small print run done on this realllllly strong material. Not bendable or floppy. The color won’t run even if you set your cocktail on them; they are made to last and about COMIC BOOK SIZED.
FUN FACT: once you read the book, you will know that there are RABBITS hidden all over Leia’s work, and Ross hid whole crowds of them in this cover. Probably there are even more hiding in the shadows by now–you know how rabbits are.
Please, oh Best Beloveds, help me get the word out, and let’s get the order numbers UP to 20 so there can be a drawing for FIVE of these geek-sheek, completely original weirdo things come July 10th.
