What my Biffles Did on Their Summer Vacation

The first trailer for Water for Elephants is out, and WOW but it looks like sexy, brilliant OSCAR BAIT. I am SO excited to see this movie. I would be foaming even if it wasn’t Sara’s book because it looks AMAZING. I have loved Reese Witherspoon since Scott and I were flipping channels about and got caught by her in a weird road movie. We watched the whowel thing, then went and rented it to see the first ten minutes. She played a foul mouthed psychopathic version of Little Red Riding Hood, and Kiefer Southerland played the wolf. It was called Freeway, I think? It isn’t a great movie, but it’s a good one, and she is great in it. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WFE!

Meanwhile, Karen has a new book coming out ANY second, American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare, The Life and TImes of Gypsy Rose Lee and she has been filming a literary parody of one of Gypsy’s most famous routines. It’s very clever and referencey and droll. And like the best Burlesque, it is all about the tease: a hint of bare shoulder, a flash of thigh. There is no nudity of course, BUT EVEN SO…

When her mother saw the costume (a recreation of a real GRL one) she decided the top was not sufficient unto the day, and she took it and sewed about 50 pounds of lace onto it before she allowed Karen to do the performance. Hee!

Boom Shaka Laka!

I love moms.

Doesn’t she look awesome?

Hee, gotta shelter that sweet, innocent little flower from accidentally uncovering too much in front of the slavering hordes, dontcha know!

I so excited to see this movie! I lovelovelove the book (thanks for the recommendation!), and I cannot wait to get my hands on Ape House (I’ve been instructed not to buy anything for myself with Christmas coming)!

    Can’t wait to see WFE.

I didn’t realize Christopher Waltz was playing the ringmaster role … he’s PERFECT.

  • I’ve been in love with Reese ever since Man in the Moon, one of THE most heart-wrenching but oh-so-good movies I’ve ever seen.

WFE looks amazing. Frankly, I was afraid of what they (they being Hollywood) would do to it, but that looks really, really good.

Leandra, I *love* Man in the Moon. What a gorgeous, heartbreaking film.

And yes, Freeway was an odd little movie, but man was Reese good in it. I love her. I didn’t know that Christophe Waltz was playing the ringmaster, but he is perfect and I cannot WAIT to see it.

  • The WFE trailer looks amazing!!!! I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to see the movie because I had loved the book so much and I was so afraid it would be ruined. Well, I’m not afraid of that anymore. (I am afraid that I will need a ton of tissues, though…the trailer made me sniffle a bit.)

  • I can’t wait to see Water for Elephants. I loved the book and the movie looks just breathtaking!

OMG I got goose bumps watching the trailer! I love the book and this looks like it is going to be a beautiful movie to watch. I confess I have a girl crush on Reese so I am so glad she is in it.

After I read the book I thought, “I hope to God they don’t make a movie of it!” because I loved it, and because it was so upsetting. But…Hal Holbrook! Reese Witherspoon! Christopher Waltz! Oh all RIGHT. I’ll see it.

How did I miss that WFE was being made into a movie?! I am so excited! I love that book!

Oh, and I can’t wait to read Karen’s new book!

  • Hal Holbrook!! Reese Witherspoon!! And that sparkly vampire guy.
    Nice casting.

I am SO EXCITED to watch Water for Elephants (the movie). Love, love Reese Witherspoon, yay!

  • Love everything about that trailer, especially Reese Witherspoon (love Nashville’s hometown girl) and Hal Holbrook. And I must admit that Robert Pattinson is strikingly handsome when he has washed his hair and and isn’t all vamped up.

But I must go back and read WFE again before it comes out. When I read it the first time I didn’t realize you and Sara were BFF’s. And as a momma to two girls, can I just say “I heart Karen’s mom!” Of course mine are 7 & 4 at present, but it just goes to show that they are always your babies.

  • I *finally* got to read the copy of Ape House that I won on your very, very pretty site and I absolutely adored it! I went to her website to leave her a glowing and somewhat fervent comment or email, but there is no way to contact her.

However, thank you again so very much for the wonderful book.

  • I really liked your blog, it is in my bookmarks. I think my site you will like it too.

  • Jill, thank you!

And I wish I could go see WFE right. this. minute.

    Joshilyn, (and Karen)

I have LOVED all of Sara’s books, and all of your (Joshilyn’s) books, so does it follow that I would love Karen’s book too? (I am sorry to admit that I have not read anything by her). I don’t often read non-fiction unless it is recommended by someone.

  • Sara

I think it does follow. I am personally sure that you will LOVE Karen’s books. They are non-fiction books that have all the tension, suspense, and drama of fiction. Except that truth is, in fact, stranger than fiction. You’ll see. 😉

    Thank you Sara. *pretty curtsy*
