A Little Linky Lovefest

I have been anthology-cally busy this last year, and I forgot to tell you.

My good friend Sonny Brewer invited me to be in a very cool anthology called Don’t Quit Your Day Job: Acclaimed Authors and the Day Jobs They Quit. I wrote about my terrible year as a paper-toting office monkey. A bunch of folks whose work I love are in there, including Tom Franklin, Pat Conroy, Cassandra King, John Grisham, Rick Bragg, Michelle Richmond, and half a slew more.

It’s out now, and the reviews are quite nice!

Coming out in time to be a feast-tastic Holiday gift Table of Contents, a cook book for book clubs and booklovers, in which a bunch of writers like Lisa See and Jacqueline Michard share either their favorite recipes, often a recipe that one of their characters makes.

I contributed Rose Mae Lolley’s Chess Pie recipe, which is secretly my very own Aunt Gladys’ Chess Pie recipe. If you don’t know what a Chess Pie is, I explain it in the book. If you do, HI! You must be Southern.

Sara contributed, too. She is an amazing chef. Her poutine is to die for, her Yorkshire puds and her wellington are worth killing for, and she taught me that yes, Virginia, parsnips can be rendered not just edible but amazing if you put them in the Legendary Gruen Parsnip and Leek Bread Pudding. In this book she parts with her coveted Salmon en Croute with Hollandaise recipe.

In other news, Karen Abbott has started a delightful blog called Wicked History, (I love that name) where she shares dirty little nuggets of Americana she unearths in her research. It’s linked here for now, but you can find it in the sidebar forever.

As for me, I am today blogging over on my Southern Authors blog.

    Though a Yankee, I have a couple Southern cookbooks, so I knew the “secret” of chess pie. Though it’s very similar to my grandmother’s French-Canadian sugar pie! Mmmm, gotta make one soon. I’d make poutine too, but I can’t get a decent squeaky curd cheese around here, which you really need. 😀

    These errors infest the archives….if I had to proof this blog the way I would a formal essay, I would blog maybe once every two weeks… Sorry.

    Chess pie is the only pie my mother knows how to make and the only one served in our house growing up. YUM!

    ps. don’t worry about that much proofing! I would hate to have less FTK to read 🙂

  • I once tried to explain to my (very Yankee)husband’s (even Yankee-er) grandmother how pecan pie was essentially chess pie with pecans. She looked at me and said, “What the hell is a CHESS pie?”

    This is the problem with inter-marrying.

    Also, she said “peecan” instead of “pehcahn.” My daddy always said that a pecan is a nut that makes a wonderful pie. A pee-can is something you take on a long car trip.
