Comments: Things to do While Endlessly Ill: Day Three (Part One)

Ooh vicarious shopping! One of my favorite things to do! And you linked all purty dishes too - thank you, my husband thanks you, our bank account thanks you.

Posted by inkgrrl at July 10, 2008 8:34 AM

If only I had known about your sad dish situation when you came north! They have these stores around here called Christmas Tree Shops (they're year round stores. I stopped trying to figure out why years ago.). I think they were recently bought by Bed Bath and Beyond and I think alot of it is their overstocks. The stuff is ridiculously cheap. The stores aren't pretty but I've been in much worse. We had the same problem with out dishes being systematically assassinated by our children. I got an entire set for 12 - dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, mugs (not cups and saucers) for like $30. They were nothing special but they matched, I didn't hate them and they kept us from having to eat mac and cheese straight from the pot.

Next time... next time....

Posted by Em at July 10, 2008 8:43 AM

After eleven years on Capistrano by Pfaltzgraff (and the loss of only one dinner plate and one salad plate) I convined the hubs we needed new dishes and we splurged on the red Fiesta ware. Now I'm going to accent with the yellow Fiesta ware.

It's really quite sad how happy my new dishes make me.

Posted by Leandra at July 10, 2008 8:45 AM

I like option A - the color would go with your kitchen, and it has an neat shape. And you're right - while the dishes are pretty, the accent pieces are adorable.

Posted by Cathy at July 10, 2008 9:10 AM

I didn't realize when we spoke yesterday that we were on a MISSION to find new dishes...or I might have been a bit more SERIOUS about browsing with you. I still like choice B. Very cute. C works best with your kitchen tho. A...eh. My Owen would love them when we visit, at least!

There. Now I've been even less helpful than yesterday. ;)

Posted by Amy-Go at July 10, 2008 9:48 AM

See, I think the non-blueness of the first set (with the cute accent pieces) would actually look quite lovely in your kitchen. Blue and yellow together, with enough white mixed in, just scream Mediterranean to me, and I love that.

Feel better... and PUT DOWN THE PUFFS. I didn't say anything!

Posted by Aimee at July 10, 2008 10:08 AM

I like the yellow (1st choice) as well. We need to replace our dishes too--15 years of broken. French Countryside by Mikasa. It's still available, but I fear it will someday not be.

Posted by Roxanne at July 10, 2008 10:30 AM

I'm with Leandra on the Fiestaware. I have about 14 different 5 pc settings, all in different colors. And I have this weird thing about making sure no one gets two pieces in the same color. IT MUST BE A HODGEPODGE.

Posted by Melisa at July 10, 2008 10:58 AM

I've never been able to decide on a pattern that I could live with forever. I'm always afraid to invest in one, sure that I'll get sick of whatever I pick after a few short weeks.

So, after 17 years, we're STILL using a nearly unbreakable all-black cheapo set from Ames!

Posted by Brigitte at July 10, 2008 11:03 AM

See, I kind of like the first set, too, especially when I espied the great accent pieces. I think they'd look great in your kitchen!

Posted by Keetha at July 10, 2008 11:29 AM

OMG! I am so glad you posted about your kids perching on strange objects. I thought my son had some mutant goat tendencies or something. He ALWAYS stands on things not designed for it, and acts all surprised that he is doing it.

I also have a much ravaged discontinued Pfaltzgraff set. My very bad dogs have smashed most of them when trying to pilfer things off the counters. Luckily Midnight Sun is in the By Request catalog.

Posted by Laura L at July 10, 2008 11:46 AM

I think the first patter would work. I also think if you bought just a few of the crab ones, like salad plates or something you wouldn't use every day, or just a bowl, you wouldn't feel the sense of it being overdone.

But, I am agreeing with those who say check out the Fiestaware. I have some of my grandmother's origional -- they are not allowed in the dishwasher, but I recently bought some new ones to replace some other dishes we had (we never got our own plates, ours were all given to us with the "we're just going to throw them out unless you want them" offer).

The best think about the Fiestaware is that you can mix and match them. And, you can start off with some, and then add more as the money/color selection inspires you. Very versitile.

Posted by JulieB at July 10, 2008 11:59 AM

I recently bought the beginnings of a new dishset, but bought colors that go with my current plates, that go with my kitchen. Strangely the new ones don't. The question now is... Will this get me to design the kitchen like Ducky has been wanted me to do for five years? I hate searching for wallpaper border.

I like one and two, but i like the last one too. BTW your kitchen is far too lovely to really use... oh and neat too.

Posted by Cele at July 10, 2008 12:16 PM

Oooh! I like option C!! I don't think it would be too much w/the wallpaper... (and my daddy was a Prof'l Interior Designer, so.) The little bit of yellow is a nice break from all the blue. And yes, blue and yellow is very Country/French Provincial.
Most of all, it's cheerful and that's very impt esp when dieting.

But also, for all of y'all (says the Yankee in NYC) surely you must know about Replacements.com? It's a fantastic site w/gobs of not only dishes, etc. but INFORMATION. Really fascinating stuff. AND they let their employees take their dogs (and other pets) to work w/them!
It's in North Carolina if you feel like making a trip out of it.

Posted by Elizabeth at July 10, 2008 12:57 PM

I'm just busy being stunned that someone else has children who have the same strange urge to stand or walk on things that really, really shouldn't ever see the underside of feet.

Posted by Marla at July 10, 2008 2:36 PM

PS I do like option A as well (though not as much as C) but it does say "apricot" ...

Posted by Elizabeth at July 10, 2008 3:40 PM

My kids stand on things too, especially my older son. It drives me nuts!! Why?!?!?!? (I mean, why do they do it, not why does it drive me nuts.)

We have very similar Pfaltzgraaf plates. Except we didn't register because we didn't have a bridal shower because we didn't have a proper wedding, so we simply bought a boxed set at a Pfaltzgraaf outlet--do you have any of those down there? Slightly seconds, but still, nice plates. And not terribly expensive. And then when a set of four was not enough (because we'd run out of dishes before we got a full load in the dishwasher) we bought a not-as-nice boxed set from someplace like Target. We are not fancy, alas. But we do have enough plates for the time being.

Posted by amy at July 10, 2008 4:55 PM

Is it me, or is it BOYS that do that strange perching thing? And both of mine do it ... on my favorite coffee mug (after I have finished my coffee, but before that last drip has dried), on the beige living room carpet. It must be that "how to drive mom crazy" gene.

Glad to have stopped by to find replacements.com, thanks much ladies! My pfaltzgraff may be over 20 years old, but I still like it (what's left, anyway). And yes, it's blue, too!

Posted by Patti at July 10, 2008 6:23 PM

Obviously I'm in the minority here, but I love the Choice B.

Then again, I'm probably not the one to ask because I don't GET the whole thing of matching your dishes to your kitchen. I mean, you're not buying something to hang on the wall. You're buying something to put food on and eat it - probably, from the sound of it, not just in the kitchen (the eating, I mean) but in several different rooms in the house. So to me, the only thing that should count would be that you should love it and feel like you can stand to look at it for years to come - until your kidlets stand on it to death (or whatever inevitably happens to make them go to that Great Dish Barn in the Sky).

SO - a vote for B from the person who has several sets of dishes (because I am a Dish Ho), NONE of which were purchased to coordinate with any kitchen in which I have ever lived, cooked, or eaten. :-)

Posted by DebR at July 10, 2008 6:56 PM

i love love love option c.

might have to do some shopping of my own.

or not.

Posted by the planet of janet at July 10, 2008 8:01 PM

Please let us have a contest to pick your new everyday dishes. Please pleeeaaase!!!

Posted by Caryn at July 10, 2008 10:33 PM

Dearest Joshilyn, you must go look at cooking.com
They are having a BIG clearance and have some lovely dishes, plus they take PayPal.

Posted by Heather P. at July 10, 2008 10:39 PM

My vote goes for C, and I don't think it's too much.

We have two sets of dishes, the boring mushroom colored stuff (and yes, mushroom is TOO a color) that we got at Ikea, and the blue-and-purple pottery stuff that's our good stuff.

We've been desperately searching for new china and flatware we both like. It's been five years now.

So thank you for the great suggestions!

And Peach, I'm SO glad you feel better! YAY!

Posted by Fran at July 10, 2008 11:32 PM

My mother gave me the best advice when I was doing my wedding registry...

"Picture a fried egg on the plate. Would you want to look at that first thing in the morning?"

That's how I've chosen my dishes ever since!

Posted by Beth at July 11, 2008 1:32 PM

I remember back in the day when all my dishes had to match...then I lived in Japan and now I have a more eclectic design, which I realize isn't for everyone!

I'm over visiting from DebR's :-)

Posted by Janet at July 14, 2008 4:06 PM

I just had to comment that you just showed us all how very Southern you indeed are. A cast iron skillet on the stove, the absolute staple in any Southern kitchen.

Posted by shawna at July 15, 2008 1:20 PM

Oh my gosh... I thought the standing on my stuff thing was only MY kids! It makes me want to duct tape them to the roof.
